On April 3, 2025, U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced via his X account that he had a productive meeting with John Hope Bryant, a prominent businessman and founder of Operation HOPE, who has since been brought into the Treasury Department under Bessent to work on an initiative called “financial literacy”. The announcement flew under the radar, but it should be a point of concern for the MAGA base due to Bryant’s history of Democrat political contributions and his outspoken attacks on President Donald Trump. Bryant’s collaboration inside the Treasury Department with Scott Bessent raises questions about why a Trump hater who campaigned against President Trump in 2024 has been welcomed into Trump administration, and it is yet another example of the ongoing vetting crisis in the Trump White House, where a lack of vetting continues to elevate Trump haters to positions of power they are undeserving of, and unqualified for.
Federal Election Commission (FEC) records confirm that Bryant has consistently supported Democrat candidates. In 2022, he donated $500 to Democrat Rep. Sanford Bishop’s campaign in Georgia. In 2020, he contributed $500 to Sen. Raphael Warnock’s campaign, $500 to the Warnock Victory Fund, and $250 to Bishop’s campaign. In 2016, under the name Hope Bryant, he gave $500 to Hillary for America, and in 2008, he donated $500 to Obama for America.
Bryant, who lists Operation HOPE as his employer on FEC filings, founded the organization to promote diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) in corporate America. Operation HOPE’s Corporate Inclusion Initiative seeks to increase minority representation on corporate boards, emphasizing that boardrooms should reflect the nation’s ethnic and gender diversity. The organization’s Business Plan for America further underscores diversity and opportunity as key drivers of economic growth and U.S. global leadership.
Bryant also lists John Hope Bryant Enterprises as an employer on FEC forms, where he promotes initiatives like “Black Capitalists Matter” on the company’s website, advocating for economic empowerment and opportunity. These are explicitly pro-DEI policies that are in conflict with a series of executive orders (EOs) that were signed by President Trump during the first week of the new Trump administration, opposing and targeting diversity, equity, and inclusion programs in the public and private sectors. Bryant’s focus on race serves to further divide Americans along racial lines as opposed to uplifting all Americans with a color blind America First agenda.
Bryant has been vocal in his criticism of President Trump on his X account. On January 27th, 2025, Bryant shared an NPR article claiming that Bill Gates criticized Elon Musk’s support for “far-right politicians,” which also accused Musk of making a Nazi salute during Trump’s inaugural parade. Three days before the 2024 election, John Hope Bryant was actively sharing anti-Trump articles penned by his friend Anthony Scaramucci. The article highlighted Scaramucci’s regret for his brief tenure working for Trump and outlined his efforts to raise awareness about the dangers of voting for Trump, urging support for Kamala Harris instead. On February 22nd, 2024, Bryant expressed agreement with New Hampshire Gov. Chris Sununu, a supporter of Nikki Haley, who called Trump an “asshole” and stated he “isn’t the future.”
On February 2nd, 2022, Bryant described Trump as a “clear and present danger to any fair and reasonable democracy” while also praising the January 6th Committee. In July 2022, he urged former Trump administration officials to speak out against Trump in the name of “truth.” Following the 2022 midterms, Bryant celebrated the defeat of Trump-endorsed candidates.
Following January 6th, 2021, Bryant called for Trump’s resignation and praised then-Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey for banning Trump from the platform while he was still a sitting US President. On January 12th, 2021, Bryant called for the 25th Amendment to be used against President Trump, implying that President Trump was mentally unfit to be President. Also on that same day, Bryant referred to Trump as a “nutcase” and compared Trump to “Julius Caesar.” Additionally, on March 17th, 2021, Bryant posted on X, alleging that “Russia and Trump share the same goal—the denigration of the US Democratic system.” Bryant then promoted a conspiracy about how Trump was working with Putin to undermine Joe Biden.
The invitation from Secretary Bessent, a top cabinet member in the Trump administration, to collaborate with Bryant at the US Treasury Department under the Trump administration has sparked debate, given Bryant’s Democrat political history and many anti-Trump public statements. As the situation develops, it remains to be seen how Bryant’s involvement will align with the administration’s economic priorities which strongly oppose DEI in America’s markets.
