It says a lot about the state of our country when a Democrat has to remind people to show basic human decency. That’s exactly what Senator John Fetterman just did. He called out the disgusting attacks on Erika Kirk, the widow of Charlie Kirk, after her husband was assassinated in broad daylight. And let’s be honest—he’s right.
Fetterman posted on social media, saying, “It’s gross and dehumanizing to attack a widow with young children after just witnessing his public assassination.” He also said that it shouldn’t be controversial to give a grieving family the space to mourn. That should be common sense. But in today’s political climate, apparently it’s not.
Here’s what’s happening: A liberal podcaster, Jennifer Welch, went on her show and called Erika Kirk a “grifter” who should be “kicked to the curb.” She even dragged Charlie Kirk’s name through the mud, calling him racist and homophobic—just weeks after he was killed in front of a live audience. Erika is a young mother who just lost her husband, and this is how the left treats her?
Most Americans, whether they’re political or not, feel this deep down. They know there’s something wrong when people can’t even grieve without being attacked. It’s not about left or right. It’s about being human. And when someone loses their spouse in such a horrific way, you don’t call them names. You don’t question their motives. You don’t kick them when they’re down.
The fact that Fetterman, a Democrat, had to step in and say something speaks volumes. It shows how far off the rails parts of the left have gone. Even people on their own side can’t stomach the cruelty anymore. This is not what America is supposed to be.
You don’t have to agree with Charlie Kirk’s politics to understand that what happened to him was tragic. And you don’t have to support Turning Point USA to know that his wife and kids deserve peace and privacy right now. Erika didn’t ask for this. She didn’t sign up to be a public punching bag. And yet, that’s exactly what she’s become to some on the far left.
Let’s also step back and look at the bigger picture. Why are people like Jennifer Welch so quick to attack? Why does the media stay quiet when someone on the right is targeted? If the roles were reversed—if a liberal activist had been gunned down and his widow called a grifter by a conservative podcaster—you already know what would happen. The news cycle would be flooded with outrage. There would be protests and demands for accountability. But because this happened to a conservative family, the silence is deafening.
This is the double standard that regular Americans are sick of. It’s always one set of rules for the left and another set for everyone else. That’s why people are tuning out the mainstream media. That’s why trust in institutions is at an all-time low. Because they only seem to care when it fits their narrative.
Republican Rep. Nancy Mace thanked Fetterman for his words. So did Fox News analyst Gianno Caldwell. And they’re not alone. A lot of people, quietly, are nodding their heads and saying, “Finally, someone said it.” Because no one wants to live in a world where empathy is a partisan issue.
Charlie Kirk was a husband, a father, and a passionate voice for conservative values. Whether you loved him or didn’t agree with him, he didn’t deserve what happened. And his wife certainly doesn’t deserve to be vilified for simply trying to carry on.
At the end of the day, most Americans still believe in decency. We still know right from wrong. And we know that targeting a grieving widow is wrong—no matter who she voted for.
Good on Senator Fetterman for saying what needed to be said. It shouldn’t be rare for someone in politics to show a little heart. But these days, apparently, it is.
