Top Mitch McConnell Allies John Thune and John Cornyn Vying To Become Next Senate GOP Leader

Mitch McConnell’s long tenure as Senate GOP Leader will soon end. Members of the Senate GOP will hold an election on November 13th to select a new leader. The establishment wing of the Senate GOP hopes they can retain power with Texas Senator Jon Cornyn or South Dakota Senator John Thune winning the Senate leadership fight. Cornyn and Thune both have long histories of anti-Trump statements while also serving as lap dogs for Mitch McConnell. In 2022, Mitch McConnell was reelected as the Senate GOP leader via closed ballot. Sadly, McConnell’s cronies are pushing to ensure the Senate GOP rules dictate that November 13th’s Senate GOP Leadership election is conducted on a closed ballot, meaning the American people will not know who their United States Senator voted for. The United States Senate confirms judges and presidential appointments. The Senate’s confirmation power is why it is critical that RINOS like John Thune and John Cornyn not become the next Senate GOP Leader.

John Thune, who Mitch McConnell has groomed to replace him as Senate GOP Leader, has a history of making anti-Trump statements. On October 8, 2016, Thune wrote on his X account, “Donald Trump should withdraw and Mike Pence should be our nominee effective immediately.”

Laura Loomer posted about Thune’s 2016 post calling on Trump to drop out of the presidential race, “The Senate GOP cannot be run by an individual who wanted to replace Trump with Pence. We need to have this conversation now, as the presidential election is on November 5th, and the Senate GOP leadership election is on November 13th. No sense in winning the White House if we’re going to have RINOS who obstruct President Trump leading the Senate. We cannot install another RINO as Senate GOP leader. @ScottforFlorida should be the next Senate GOP leader.”

John Thune also made horrific comments about President Trump’s 2020 election integrity efforts by saying Trump’s efforts to secure the 2020 election will go down like a “shot dog.”

John Cornyn, another top McConnell ally vying to become the next Senate GOP Leader, has also made anti-Trump comments. In May of 2023, Cornyn said that President Trump can’t win the 2024 election because he is not “electable.” It is important to note that Cornyn attended a D.C. fundrasier for then presidental candadite Ron DeSantis. Cornyn eventually endorsed Trump after Trump won the Iowa Caucus by a record margin.

Given Cornyn and Thune’s anti-Trump remarks, it is no surprise that Mitch McConnell’s cronies are pushing for a secret ballot for November 13th’s Senate GOP Leadership election, meaning the American people would not know who their United States Senator voted for. In 2022, Mitch McConnell was reelected as the Senate GOP leader via closed ballot. It is widely believed that McConnell would not have been reelected as Senate GOP Leader in 2022 if the votes were public. It is very unlikely Thune or Cornyn would be elected Senate GOP Leader if November 13th’s Senate Leadership vote is public.

The United States Senate confirms judges and presidential appointments. The Senate’s confirmation power is why it is critical that an America First Senator like Rick Scott becomes the next Senate GOP Leader.
